The recently reopened Tara Art Theatre in London, UK, is the latest top-level art theatre under Tara Arts, the oldest and most prestigious cross-cultural theatre company in the UK. Designed by the Aedas cultural and artistic team, this project recently won the "Project Design Award of the Year" at this year's London Architecture Awards. The newly renovated Tara Art Theatre integrates international and local styles, creating an inspirational creative space for the first cross-cultural theater in the UK and becoming a bridge between Eastern and Western art.
The design of the theater incorporates Eastern elements, paying tribute to its Asian roots in management and property rights, and highlighting the unique characteristics of Tara Theatre in the British theater industry. The design also incorporates the Bodhi tree pattern, which is considered the "Tree of Life" in India, and the shade under the trees also symbolizes the cohesion of the community. This "Tara Tree" revolves around the building facade and is crafted using traditional British techniques, cleverly echoing Indian decorative techniques. The Bodhi tree pattern seems to invite the audience to enter the theater to listen and share their stories, and this unique appearance also creates a vivid urban landmark.
The Tara Art Theatre has a fully equipped, flexible, and double expanded theater main hall, a brand new soundproof rehearsal room, and other auxiliary facilities to meet the current trend of performance and audience needs. The main hall of the theater is characterized by highly adaptable mud flooring, creating an original and personalized ground that vividly interprets Asian culture in London, a fashionable city.
7500 bricks used in the new theater were recycled from the old theater, and building materials were also sourced locally as much as possible. 96% of the material for the Tara Tree on the exterior facade comes from recycled waste. The internal space is well lit and transparent, spacious and bright, and equipped with colored blinds. The light passing through high-rise windows can provide sunlight for the main hall, which is a unique and rare design.
